Readings Cinemas & Mantra Hotel Traralgon

Octave Acoustics was engaged to provide comprehensive acoustic consultancy services to the design and construction stages of the Readings Cinemas / Mantra Hotel development in Traralgon. The development delivered a 5 auditorium cinema facility integrated into a Mantra Hotel. The cinema structure was of lightweight steel set above a bowling alley suspended over basement parking.

The use of lightweight structure provided a unique challenge of delivering very high levels of sound insulation between:

1. Adjacent cinema auditoria sufficient to satisfy Readings corporate sound insulation requirements.
2. The cinema auditoria and adjacent hotel suites sufficient to satisfy EPA and hotel quality requirements.
3. The bowling alley and the cinema auditoria above.

The solution was to float each cinema within the building envelope using a combination of lightweight floating floor systems, acoustically suspended barrier ceilings and isolated wall girts. Throughout the project, Octave Acoustics worked closely with the head contractor reviewing the evolving designs, construction details and works onsite.

A comprehensive sound insulation testing program conducted prior to handover confirmed that all sound insulation requirements for the project were satisfied.

Key to the success of this innovative undertaking was the collaborative approach adopted by both Octave Acoustics and the head contractor.
